At the Feb. 2009 Humboldt Watershed Council meeting we received an update from the organization known as “Healthy Humboldt Coalition.” HWC is very pleased with the work Healthy Humboldt is doing.

HWC’s volunteer Joyce King is also doing great work participating in the general plan revision process. For more information you can contact her at: samonely@quik.com

From Healthy Humboldt’s website:

What is a healthy Humboldt?

The decisions we make in the General Plan will shape Humboldt County’s economy, environment, and public health for generations to come.  It’s up to us to make sure the County makes smart choices that benefit us all. Humboldt County families deserve a General Plan that works for healthy communities and a prosperous future.  This means a General Plan that:

hbmwd2 HWC to participate in Water Districts Water Resource Planning Advisory Committee

Humboldt Watershed Council’s Bill Thorington has been invited to participate in the Water District’s Water Resource Planning Advisory Committee as one of two reps from the environmental community. Pete Nichols is the other.

Bill was nominated by HWC, Pete was nominated by the NEC Board.

Congrats and thanks to Bill and Pete! I look forward to working with both of them, and the rest of ya’ll to determine the best course of action the Water District should take to protect our rights to water in the Mad River and community water use.

There is some information about the process on the HBMWD website:

Details for how the larger community can get involved in this process shall be forthcoming. Anyone is welcome to contact me with questions.

Hurwitz Fraud Trial Begins Today

hurwitz1a Hurwitz Fraud Trial Begins Today

A trial in Oakland Federal Court kicks off today to determine whether Maxxam, Inc. and its CEO, Charles Hurwitz, defrauded the federal government during the historic 1999 Headwaters Deal.

The case was brought by former Calif. Dept. of Forestry chief Richard Wilson and current state forester Chris Maranto.

The trial will pit two of California’s most formidable trial attorneys against each other before a jury of Hurwitz’ peers.  Joseph Cotchett will present the case on behalf of Wilson and Maranto, and James Brosnahan will do the dirty work of defending Hurwitz and Maxxam.

Both Cotchett and Brosnahan have been named “Super Lawyers” for their achievements in the lawyering biz.  Google is full of accolades for both men.  The jury is in for a lively show.

Thanks to Humboldt Herald for for posting the text above!

Also I worked on getting photo-evidence together for the plaintiffs last week. Those photos can be viewed here: http://forestpolicyresearch.org/2009/04/15/ancient-redwood-canopy-ecology/ –Deane Rimerman

Mark Ryden Allegory of the f.jpg.scaled.500 Strategic Planning Session Sunday April 26th 11 AM to 3 PM

You are cordially invited and urged to attend our first strategic planning session this year.

After a substantial change in our leadership, thanks to wisdom of our electorate elevating our past President, Mark Lovelace, to Humboldt County Supervisor, we are embarking on the next generation of the HWC, under new leadership, and with several new board members.

This will be a very important few hours as we will examine our past and decide on the direction for our future.

That doesn’t necessarily mean lots of change, but it will give us the opportunity to consider our future and focus our resources and energy where they will have the most impact.

If you’d like to attend Please contact our host Carlos Quillez cqjess@scbglobal.net

April’s Richardson Grove update

richardson grove.jpg.scaled.500 Aprils Richardson Grove update

Richardson Grove: EIR comment period is closed on the “realignment project.” CalTrans is now drilling and apparently re-considering the retaining wall. This will potentially trigger a new EIR. KMUD to interview Sharon Duggins on Monday to discuss murrelet impacts, compaction of tree roots, which would also call for additional environmental studies, taking up to two years. This would buy time to look at alternative modes of transport, i.e., Dave Spreen’s proposals for Humboldt Bay shipping. Lack of alternative plans might also be a basis on which to challenge the plan. Ken will meet with Scott at EPIC to discuss possible HWC actions, including public education. Ken is working on a position paper. (Ken)
