On the Mad River, Army Corp is
assembling all gravel extractors for a uniform permitting process, potential
expansion upriver. CHERT was intended for management of existing operations,
not expansion. On the Van Duzen, NCRA is rehabilitating track with the goal of
shipping gravel from Dyerville Loop to Fields landing and then out by barge. On
the Eel River, NCRA proposes to ship hard rock mined on the north side of
Island Mountain through the tunnel and south. A rail watchdog group [name?] is
challenging their draft EIR, and Friends of the Eel also opposes these plans,
which are connected to the rail and shipping fantasies of Humboldt Bay’s Harbor
Commission. (Carlos)
